It's used before work starts, reviewed with the crew, and kept as a record. A pre-task plan is the same idea under a different name. The structure is simple; the writing is what stops people.

The structure

Three columns. Step: what you do, in order. Hazard: what could go wrong at that step — a pinch, a fall, a fume, a cut. Control: what stops it — the guard, the PPE, the lockout, the spotter. Plus a header with the task, location, date and who prepared and reviewed it, and a place for the crew to sign.

What makes a JSA useful versus a formality

Specific steps, not 'perform the work'. Real hazards for this site, not generic ones copied from a template. Controls that name a thing — which guard, which glove, which anchor — not 'be careful'. And a crew that actually read it, in a language they read.

The language problem

A JSA in English, signed by a crew that reads Spanish, is a signature on a form. The hazards were never communicated. The value of the document is in the crew understanding it, and that means it has to reach them in the language they think in.

Writing one by talking

Describe the job the way you'd walk a new hire through it: 'first we set the ladder — watch the angle, the ground has to be level — then…' Tiendo turns that into the step / hazard / control structure, filled only from what you said, and translates it.
